More to the place.
More to discover.

Researched background and planning context, separate from our original caption.

An island with an ancient forest

Madeira’s Laurisilva entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. It preserves the largest surviving area of a laurel-forest type that was once far more widespread. This is island context, not a claim about where the race took us.

What is a levada?

Madeira’s levadas are water channels built to carry water across steep terrain. UNESCO describes how they follow the landscape’s contours through the forest, supplying water for homes, irrigation and hydropower.
