Our original caption

A wee look back at our October wander round York 🏙️ The Shambles was once full of butchers’ shops. Some buildings still have the wooden shelves where meat was sold through the windows. Before anyone says it — the Shambles was already called that before we arrived 😂 Swipe through the Shambles, Viking York at @jorvikviking, York Minster and a family snap at @valhallayork. #York #TheShambles #YorkMinster #FamilyAdventures #DavieRae

02 / A little local knowledge

More to the place.
More to discover.

Researched background and planning context, separate from our original caption.

A proper Shambles

Long before the sweet shops and shop-window browsing, the Shambles was a street of butchers. York’s Historic Environment Record traces that trade over centuries and records 25 butchers with shops here in 1830.

Vikings beneath your feet

JORVIK stands directly above the Coppergate excavation. Archaeologists working there between 1976 and 1981 uncovered the houses, workshops and backyards that helped reveal everyday life in Viking-age York.
